What documents do I need when Moving Overseas To the United Kingdom from Australia?

When moving to England or to anywhere inside the UK it is very important to know what are the documentation requirements by the UK Customs Authorities. Completing the required documentation correctly saves you time and avoids unnecessary stress.

The main documents that need to be submitted to the UK authorities when your cargo is entering the UK are the Bill of Lading or Sea-Way Bill, valid consignee’s passport and a Packing/Inventory list.

The C3 and C104A forms have been replaced by the TOR (Transfer of Residence)

Importing a motor vehicle into the UK

Importing a motor vehicle into the UK from outside of the European Union is tax/duty exempt if the vehicle is for the temporary import or through a TOR, otherwise varied duty 6-10% is applicable on permanent imports.

Importing a motor vehicle into the UK will require a completed TOR for UK Customs, more information on importing and declaring from the HMRC can be found here.

What is prohibited to import into the UK?

Some items prohibited from importation into the UK are: Narcotics, drugs, explosives, weapons, plants, animal produce, protected-species animal products, pornographic material etc.

There is no tax or duty on cash brought into the UK from outside the EU but you are required to declare cash of 10,000 Euros or more (or equivalent in foreign currency). You can find more information on how to declare here.

How to import firearms into the UK

Any firearms aimed for the importation into the UK must have legitimate certificates and warrants issued by the relevant authorities from the country of origin.

If you wish to export firearms from Australia, contact the Australian Government Department of Defence and complete the Restricted Goods Permit for Export (RGPE) form available on the right hand side of this page. To declare your belongings to Customs and to claim any duty and tax-free reliefs that may apply, you need to complete form TOR and apply for a URN (Unique Reference Number).
