Shipping to Egypt from Australia
When shipping a 20FT or 40FT container (FCL) to Egypt you are paying a fixed sea-freight rate (subject to USD/AUD exchange rate/s) and may fill up as little or as much of the sole-purpose container as you wish.
With this type of service, the container space is not shared with other cargoes and your goods are not handled from one container to another at several points during transit such as is the case with shared container services (LCL), rather, the goods stay in the same container they were packed at origin, until delivery at the final destination.
What size shipping container do I need for moving my personal effects to Egypt?
- 20FT shipping containers have inner dimensions as follows and a capacity of 33m3//1,158cubic feet:
5.90m x 2.35m x 2.38m // 19.35 ft x 7.71 ft x 7.80 ft - 20FT containers are usually sufficient for an entire 2-3 bedroom house contents
- 40FT shipping containers have inner dimensions as follows and have a capacity of 67m3//2,372cubic feet:
12.01m x 2.35m x 2.38m // 39.39 ft x 7.71 ft x 7.80 ft - 40FT containers are usually sufficient for an entire 2-3 bedroom house contents and a motor vehicle, or, an entire 4-5 bedroom house contents.
- 40FT (High Cube) shipping containers have inner dimensions as follows and have a capacity of 76m3//2,679cubic feet:
12.01m x 2.35m x 2.69m // 39.39 ft x 7.71 ft x 8.82 ft - 40HC containers are 30cm//1foot higher than a standard 40FT container and are designed for when that little bit of extra space is needed for excess cargoes.

Importer must be in Egypt at the time of shipment arrival for customs clearance.
The importer must have a pre-selected agent in Egypt to organise the import customs clearance on their behalf, an ACID (Advanced Cargo Information Declaration) number needs to be in place for the importer prior to export at origin.
Used personal effects can take 2-3 weeks to clear customs, it is highly recommended to pre-purchase additional container free time at origin (if possible) to avoid hefty per day demurrage surcharges.
Foreigners and returning nationals are not entitled to duty concessions and will need to pay taxes/duties on the goods.
All shipments of used personal effects are subject to physical customs inspections.
Guarantee letter is required to be signed by the importer to state taxes/duties will be settled on their own account.
All tapes, DVDs, CDs, books etc may be inspected by Egyptian Customs authorities, these should be clearly labelled and packed near the container door for easy access.
Required documents for import:
- Copy of the importers passport photo page (entry date to be less than 6 months)
- Bill of Lading (importers name must read exactly as per passport)
- Comprehensive valued inventory list in Arabic. Inventory list must be typed, as handwritten copies are not accepted. Electronics and appliances need to show the make/model/serial number on the inventory list.
- Authorisation for destination agent to arrange import customs clearance.
- Power of Attorney for destination agent to arrange an ACID (Advanced Cargo Information Declaration) number on behalf of the importer.
Motor vehicles must be new, taxes/duties will apply.
Required documents for vehicle importation:
- Certificate of title and registration (original), purchase invoice showing the VIN and engine numbers.
- The motor vehicle needs to be listed on the container manifest and the shipping documents showing the motor vehicle make/model/year/VIN.
- Taxes/duties apply for motor vehicles for non-diplomats, destination agent needs to provide a green light prior to shipping any motor vehicles. Vehicles may extend the customs clearance time, which may cause the importer to pay additional demurrage (container hire) and port storage charges.
